Parent GuideIntroduction
This website is for all children and young people in Stirling Council area and others who may be interested. It tells you about some important changes in the law which affect children and young people who require additional help with their learning.

The Education (Additional Support for Learning for Act) (Scotland) 2004 has put in place a new system for helping children and yooung people with additional support needs.

What are additional support needs?
Basically, if you need extra help to be able to get the most from school for any reason at all, then you have “additional support needs” and your school must help you.

So what does it mean?
You might need help for the whole time you’re at school or you might only need it for a little while (maybe a few weeks or months). Here are examples of things that might mean you need some extra help:

difficulties with reading, or spelling problems at home: eg parents splitting up or a family member dying.

physical, or learning disability helping to care for someone at home.

being far ahead of your classmates in some (or all) of your subjects.

being bullied

finding it difficult to control your behaviour

being a young parent.

moving around a lot and having to change schools.

mental health problems: eg feeling depressed, anxious or having an eating disorder.

finding it difficult to join in or make friends.

being homeless or in temporary accommodation.

These are just a few examples. You might need support at school for a reason that isn’t in this list.

What is the new Act aiming to do?
The Act will make a real difference to children and young peoples lives by giving support where it is needed and when it is needed.

Working Together
Those helping you will:

Share information
Work together to see what can be done to help you when you need

Your Views are important
You should :

Be listened to
Be able to talk about issues when you want to, with the people you want to
Have someone to help you
Be involved in, and helped with, decisions about your life.

David Cameron, Stirling’s Director of Children’s Services, explains Stirling’s vision for additional support for learning.
