Parent GuideChildren's rights and responsibilities

Everyone has rights and responsiblities, including YOU! Some of these rights are explained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Under the ASL Act, young people, aged 16 and over, have specific rights, however most of these rights also apply to all children:

To ask if they have additional support needs.

To request an assessment or examination.

To receive information or advice about their additional support needs.

To be involved in decisions and planning about their needs.

To be asked their views and have them taken into account.

To receive a copy of their coordinated support plan.

To have their case heard by an Additional Supports Need Tribunal if they disagree with something to do with their coordinated support plan.

To make a placing request.

To have a supporter or advocate present at any discussions.

To have free independent mediation when disagreements arise.
